I’d like to know how DAB Radios and Freeview boxes receive their time signal and how accurate it is.

The time shown on a DAB radio or Freeview box’s display screen is set from the broadcast signal. It is regularly checked and, if necessary, adjusted to match the signal.

This can only happen when the radio or Freeview box is switched on and receiving a station. Many radios and Freeview boxes only check the broadcast time once an hour.

Dab Radios ? The Future Of Radio Broadcasting Is Loud And Clear

The humble radio has been a great source of entertainment for well over a century, since Thomas Edison filed patents for early radio technology we have used radios as early news services, audio plays, call in discussion shows and obviously music. In the days before Televisions whole families would nightly gather round the radio, or wireless as it was referred to in the 1930s to enjoy entertainment especially during the two World Wars.

These days the radio is still a mainstay in most households, whilst TVs added pictures to the sounds we listened to on the radio there are still people who enjoy listening to either spoken word or music on the radio. If people don’t listen to the radio at home anymore then there’s a high chance that they will in their cars where radios still rule, partially because it is too dangerous to watch TV in the car!

Modern music is typically listened to on MP3 players and CD players and so sometimes people may have not been able to get a good enough reception, making the radio sound terribly scratchy or interfered by static. Luckily there are now DAB radios which use a digital signal to provide excellent sound quality as well as a greater choice of stations and programmes to listen to.

DAB radios have many advantages over traditional analogue radios, firstly tuning to a new station is much easier as it is more like changing the channel on a TV, there’s no twiddling the dial to get the best signal and all stations have their name shown so you know exactly which channel you’re tuned to, saving time waiting to hear a clue as to what station you’re listening to.

Some stations that play a lot of music can actually broadcast song information which is shown on your radio; this is a welcome feature as many people will have encountered a situation where you’ve heard a great song on the radio but didn’t catch the DJ mention the track name and artist.

A lot of DAB radios can be home radios that are not too large and perfect for taking outside when working in the garage or up a ladder, other varieties aside from in car DAB radios are portable handheld DAB radios, these look like MP3 players but can actually be smaller as they do not need the other larger parts that MP3 players have such as hard drives and big colour screens.

So with better sound quality these new DAB radios have taken a technology we’ve enjoyed and made it even more convenient and enjoyable.

DAB Radios – Things You Need to Know Before You Buy

Owning a radio that will accept the signal becomes a necessity to fully appreciate the benefits of this preferred technology. The answer is yes, DAB radios may also receive signals from non digital broadcasting but the reverse is not true. In order to receive and fully utilize a DAB signal, a radio must be manufactured to include specific features that accept those signals. One of the advantages of the new models of digital radios is their ability to remain tuned into a station even if the radio is moved. Radio stations in the UK prefer the DAB technology because of the lower broadcasting cost.

Types and Styles of DAB radios

Because digital broadcasting is becoming the preferred method in the UK, a wide line of DAB ready radios continually appear on the market. Portable or hand held DAB digital radios, many in retro styles or flashy colours, include built in speakers and offer flexibility to be taken along on a trip.
