Computers and Electronics While Traveling Overseas

COMPUTING ON THE MOVE

Well i’m off on my holidays,this time overseas,America,but i still need to be “on-line” on a daily basis for my personal & business needs, so i have purchased some lightweight products ,that don’t take much room and are easily transportable

1, THE COMPUTER

Well the first thing is the computer ,shall i take my old compaq armarda M700 ,which has been a trusty partner in the past or shall i buy in a new one , here we go scouting around the shops or should i say online ,there’s so many choices from, this laptop to that laptop with this spec’ to that spec’geez my holiday will be over before i choose one at this rate .In the finish i have made my choice on size ,purely for travelings sake ,i went for for a Packard Bell XS200-06,seems a pretty good choice to me, it has a built in web cam ,microphone ,ofcourse speakers,bluetooth ,wifi , hey its the business,as long as you have good eye sight, as the screens a bit small, its ideal for me.only weighs a couple of pounds, so i thinK i have made a good choice.

2, MUSIC

Now i’m not into music in a big way just a few oldies,so i won’t be taking too much in that regards ,cut out the cd’s, so i have brought myself a mp3/dab radio .my other portable radio packed up so this one will do two jobs.As i’m driving over 2000 miles i need some entertianment to keep me amused,and my experiences in the past of radio stations in america have not been good i can record off the net my favourite english station and download onto my new Alba mp3 player,and thro’ a simple device can get it playing thro’ the car stereo system..im good to go now .

3, ATTACHMENTS & ACCESSORIES

So what do i need in this department,i prefer a handheld mouse rather than the inbuilt touch pad ,i’ll be taking my phone so i need my charger,head set perhaps ,external mic so i can keep in touch with “back home” at a cheap rate,carry case, Now buying these bits indiviually might cost a few pounds , but wait i have found something cool, the local supermarket is selling computers & accessories this week, lets see what they’ve got…I’m in luck an accessory pack for £14.99 WOW,what a deal. Now i ain’t heard that much about Tevion products but anything else i have brought from there seem good quality, and for that small amount i’m prepared to take a chance ,so what do we have?

1, USB KEYPAD…………….not much use ,but i can make the space usefull for something else

2, USB HUB 4-WAY………….great as the laptop has only 2 usb sockets this might come in handy

3, USB CABLE……………..okay if i need a bit of extension i guess

4. EARPIECE with MIC………great,small compact and will definatly come in handy

5, NETWORK CABLE …………okay this might be usefull at some of the motels i stay at

6, USB MINI OPTICAL MOUSE….fantastic will be extreemly usefull

7, MINI USB ADAPTOR……….saves me taking the mp3 cable ..great

8, USB PIN ADAPTOR………..may be useful at some point

9, USB LIGHT……………..i’ve found these out to be useless in the past ,but you never know

and all wrapped up in a smart 6″ x 2″ zip up case what a GREAT deal

So there we are i’m ready to go i got my electronics, my ticket the faithfull credit card next stop USA

I’ve been looking for a small-ish BATTERY operated DAB radio alarm clock. I have been looking for quite a while now with no luck. I require it for use on a boat. Any help would be appretated.

Try Argos, loads of different ones. The price varies but if for a boat mind take spare batteries!!!!!!!

The range it offers is pretty impressive from the Pure Move – a digital radio ideal for picnics or in the garden, to it’s Evoke III model that allows you to pause radio and rewind in case you miss something. You can also record straight to SD card so you can play back your favourite show later in the week. If you’re not up for any of the Pure Digital offerings, Roberts is also worth checking out.

Bose iPod dock

DAB Radios – Things You Need to Know Before You Buy

Owning a radio that will accept the signal becomes a necessity to fully appreciate the benefits of this preferred technology. Improved sound quality and the ability to view song choices and receive other information such as news headlines with “radiotext” are some of the advantages of choosing a DAB radio over other types. A wide variety of portable or built in models is available and the list includes all the required features for DAB reception.

What is DAB Technology?

The UK launched DAB technology in 1995 and engineers within the region continue to improve the capabilities and service of this type of broadcasting. Known as digital audio broadcasting, the concept eliminates the difference between AM and FM signals and instead compresses and converts audio streams into a unified signal. The technology allows more stations to broadcast with a spectrum of channels referred to as a DAB ensemble.

The benefit that a listener receives from digital audio broadcasting is an improved sound quality and less interference from noise and static. One of the fun features that evolved from this technology is the ability to broadcast digital “radiotext”. Song titles are listed as they are played over the air as is other information such as news headlines, weather and traffic updates. All DAB radios are equipped with a digital readout screen that can be monitored for text messages as well as numeric channel information.

Are DAB Radios Adaptable to all Broadcasting Systems?

The answer is yes, DAB radios may also receive signals from non digital broadcasting but the reverse is not true. In order to receive and fully utilize a DAB signal, a radio must be manufactured to include specific features that accept those signals. One of the advantages of the new models of digital radios is their ability to remain tuned into a station even if the radio is moved. Radio stations in the UK prefer the DAB technology because of the lower broadcasting cost.

Types and Styles of DAB radios

Because digital broadcasting is becoming the preferred method in the UK, a wide line of DAB ready radios continually appear on the market. Portable or hand held DAB digital radios, many in retro styles or flashy colours, include built in speakers and offer flexibility to be taken along on a trip. For home use, DAB radios with built in clocks and alarms now replace the older analog models. Contemporary radios with full sets of high grade detached speakers and CD players take full advantage of the DAB quality sound system. Most models offer programmable features that allow the user to quickly turn to their favourite station.
